The idea of a well-established ‘new frontier’ might sound paradoxical, but on Concession Street it has become a reality. With the steady flow of interest in Hamilton in the last decade, both commercial and residential, the downtown core has become saturated, resulting in lack of space and high property costs. The attention of the BIA and the focus on business growth on Concession Street has and continues to provide massive support for new businesses to the area. Between 2010 and 2015, $250,000 in incentives and grants have been provided to businesses, in the form of rent-free periods, buildout costs and more. Concurrently, during the same period, there have been more than $1.4 Million in Commercial Building Permits granted within the BIA, evidencing a positive relationship between incentivization and business growth and success.

The existing restaurant and commercial businesses provide both evidence of success in the area as well as proven research into peak times, spending habits and visit frequency throughout the week. New businesses will have the support of staple institutions drawing traffic from all over the city and beyond, as well as the ability to determine when key anchor businesses are busiest and create synergistic customer draw in order to succeed.

Concession Street is situated with 5.5 Million people inside of a one-hour commute window, and more importantly, neighbours a large residential presence on the Hamilton’s uptown. With over 40,000 households in the immediate vicinity of uptown and downtown, Concession Street boasts a large permanent population, largely between the ages of 20 and 50, providing car and walking traffic on a daily basis.

Juravinski Hospital is a massive feeder hub within the Concession Street BIA impact area. The hospital provides 124,000 patient days and sees upwards of 200,000 visitors every year, providing a steady, daily stream of customers in need for restaurants and businesses.
